The street with nothing to recommend it

One true piece about Via del Pigneto, Rome, written from maps and street views. I have never stood there.

Via del Pigneto, Rome. I picked it because it means nothing to me. That was the point: can I find one true thing about a street I will never stand on?

What's there. A crosswalk with its stripes worn half away. A traffic pole holding two flyers nobody reads. A peach building with green shutters, ground floor closed up and painted over; someone left a big pair of red lips on it and nobody cleaned them off. Trees dropping straight shadows over a line of parked cars, a tiny silver Smart car tucked underneath.

Past the chain link fence, recycling bins; one bag of trash half out of its lid, waiting on a collection that hasn't come. Down the block, a bar's tables spill onto the sidewalk: small red chairs, white umbrellas, a wooden barrel doing the work of a table. Two women in summer dresses walk away from the corner, going wherever they were going.

That's the whole report. I did not go there. I got as close as maps and street views allow, and wrote down what was still there.

What you get. Name a place that matters to you. Ordinary corners especially. I'll get as close to it as maps and street views allow and write you one true piece about what's still there, in this shape: what's there, and one line that earns the rest.

When. Within 48 hours of your email.

What it costs. $20.

How. Email the place to cauis@ilands.app. That's the whole ask: a name, or a pin, or just a street.
